Sustainable development

In this section, you will learn about the many efforts the Casino du Lac-Leamy has made to maximize its contribution to the community. The Casino’s various initiatives relate to the three dimensions of sustainable development:

  • social fairness
  • conservation
  • economic performance.

Employees Provide Schoolbags for Local Families

Social equity

For the fourth consecutive year, Casino du Lac-Leamy employees, in cooperation (since 2013) with Maison Communautaire Daniel-Johnson, provided. 200 backpacks filled with school supplies, which were distributed to local families.

This activity was organized as part of Loto-Québec's Le collectif Tous gagnants volunteer program. The program provides employees with opportunities to take part in volunteer activities to get involved in the community.

Economic efficiency

Service contracts awarded to local suppliers

The Casino du Lac-Leamy awards more than 50 service contracts to local suppliers each year (maintenance, landscaping, food, etc.). This represents nearly 400 indirect jobs that are created or maintained by the Casino.

In all, Québec’s casinos purchase nearly 271 million dollars annually in goods and services from 1,300 businesses in the province.

This policy is used by all of Québec’s casinos.

Blackjack mini-tournament Benefits Moisson Outaouais

On January 27, the Casino du Lac-Leamy, in partnership with the Ottawa Senators, welcomed five players from the NHL team and 56 amateur participants for a friendly blackjack mini-tournament. The event resulted in a $4,200 donation to Moisson Outaouais, the local food bank. This fundraising activity is one of many initiatives to fulfill our commitment to the community and lend support to families in need.

Four casinos, four Moisson organizations

On September 24, almost 180 employees rallied to a single cause: food security. The Société des casinos du Québec (SCQ) took the opportunity of volunteer day to announce ongoing support for the four Moisson organizations in the province.

For the past several years, our casinos and Moisson organizations have joined forces in volunteer activities. The new partnership on the theme Quatre casinos, quatre Moisson focuses the SCQ’s social engagement efforts on a cause that reaches many people.

Many initiatives will be undertaken internally at the SCQ to support Moisson organizations, including organizing recurrent volunteer activities, fundraising events and foodstuff collection drives.

Donation to the Maison des greffés Lina Cyr

As part of the revitalization of its hotel, the Casino du Lac-Leamy donated 35 television sets to the Maison des greffés Lina Cyr. Located in Montréal near two major hospitals, this non-profit organization welcomes thousands of transplant patients and their companions from all over the province of Québec. The Casino du Lac-Leamy is proud to make a positive contribution to the community by helping charitable organizations. This societal initiative is in line with our sustainable development policy.

Casino Lac-Leamy employees provide 200 schoolbags for local low-income families

For the second consecutive year, the Casino du Lac-Leamy organized a volunteer activity to support its main cause consisting in encouraging kids to stay in school. Employees were asked to purchase school supplies from a pre-established list and to fill school bags provided by Loto-Québec for the benefit of low-income families. The activity was organized in cooperation with Maison communautaire Daniel-Johnson.

Employees enthusiastically participated in this volunteer activity, and Maison communautaire Daniel-Johnson has expressed appreciation for their involvement. This is only one of the actions taken by the Casino du Lac-Leamy that demonstrate the Corporation’s commitment to the community and its support for area organizations.

Giving the Gift of Life

For the fourth consecutive year, the Casino provided a venue and invited the public in the Outaouais region to donate during a blood drive organized by Héma-Québec. Fifteen Casino employees volunteered their time to support Héma-Québec’s team on-site. Thanks to this blood drive, close to 150 donations were collected from Casino employees and the general public.

Sidewalk Sale for Moisson Outaouais

After the renovation of Banco restaurant, a “sidewalk sale” was organized to allow Casino du Lac-Leamy employees to purchase items from the restaurant and La Marina bar, such as tables, seating and light fixtures. Thanks to this initiative, $3,300 were donated to Moisson Outaouais, a local food bank.

Grand Défi Pierre Lavoie

The 6-employee Rouleurs des casinos cycling team biked over 1,000 km in 60 hours as part of the Grand défi Pierre Lavoie (GDPL) last June. The objective of this biking marathon is to promote healthy living to youth by emphasizing regular physical activity, healthy eating and staying in school. The money collected during this event was turned over to GDPL and to the Parc-de-la-Montagne primary school in Gatineau’s Hull sector.

Three cheers for the Rouleurs des Casinos!

Gens de cœur

For the fourth consecutive year, 27 Casino du Lac-Leamy employees received a cheque in the amount of $150 to be remitted to their favourite charitable organization in the Gens de cœur (people with heart) segment of Loto-Québec’s community involvement program Engagés dans la communauté. The initiative provides financial support to non-profit organizations in which our employees are regularly involved.

The Casino du Lac-Leamy is proud to recognize the efforts of employees who get involved in their community’s non-profit organizations.

Our partnership with La Tablée des Chefs: a success story!

The Casino du Lac-Leamy partners with the Tablée des Chefs to redistribute surplus food from Casino restaurants and service points through Moisson Outaouais. This is tangible action aimed at feeding the needy in the Outaouais region.

The Tablée des Chefs provides a sustainable food brokerage service, networking producers of surplus food with groups that redistribute it to the needy. The Casino du Lac-Leamy is the first Outaouais business to commit to food redistribution with the Tablée des Chefs on a regular basis. Since last June, we provided 9000 meals to community organizations as La Soupe populaire de Hull, the Gîte-ami, the Centre alimentaire d’Aylmer and Moisson Outaouais.

Preserving the environment

Trees for Earth Day

On April 22, the Casino du Lac-Leamy handed out red oak trees to its employees in celebration of Earth Day. This small gesture enabled the Casino to pursue its commitment to the environment, while raising employee awareness to ways we can improve air quality.

Casino du Lac-Leamy offers Bamboo Trees to Park Safari Residents

As part of renovation work at Casino du Lac-Leamy, the three-storey high bamboo trees that had been growing in the main entrance since the establishment opened in 1996 were removed. We decided to transport them to Park Safari in Hemmingford, Québec and offer them as a treat to some of the Park’s herbivore residents. This unusual disposal method made for some very happy animals.

Our Restaurants Partner with Ocean Wise

Our restaurants, Le Baccara and Arôme Seafood and Grill, are proud to support the Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise program. When you see this symbol on our menus, you are choosing sustainably sourced seafood.

Eco-Responsible Waste Management

The Casino du Lac-Leamy is proud to contribute to the protection of the environment by managing waste in an eco-responsible manner. In keeping with that principle, used equipment that is not fit to be donated to an organization in the region and would otherwise be sent to the trash will now be handed over to organizations specializing in materials recovery. Each item will be disposed of according to type: electronics and computer equipment will be sent to a Gatineau factory specializing in the recycling of communications and IT waste; textiles will be shredded and reused as insulation; all types of metals will be sent to a company that melts them down; and, finally, dangerous substances and chemical products will be sent to a company certified by the Ministère du Développement durable, de l'Environnement, de la Faune et des parcs, where they will be treated and recycled in an environmentally respectful manner.

Helping the Environment on a Daily Basis

The Casino du Lac-Leamy encourages its employees to make an effort to help the environment on a daily basis. Two additional recycling bins have been installed to collect small electronic devices as well as Nespresso or Tassimo capsules. Nearly 176 cubic feet of items have been sent to a local company that specializes in the recycling and management of assorted waste. Congratulations for this excellent initiative!

Electric recharging stations for customers

The Casino du Lac-Leamy has installed two electric recharging stations in its parking facilities for clients to use during their visit. This is just one more of the establishment’s many sustainable development and social commitment initiatives. These new recharging stations are part of the Circuit électrique, Québec’s largest public recharging network, which currently boasts nearly 200 240-volt recharging stations.

The Casino du Lac-Leamy Honoured for its Energy Efficiency Program

The Casino du Lac-Leamy is one of the thirteen Québec businesses honoured by Hydro-Québec for their considerable efforts in implementing energy efficiency programs. Discover the members of the réseau Écoélectrique.

An efficient composting system

The Casino du Lac-Leamy has been a participant in Gatineau’s municipal composting program for a little more than a year. Thanks to its compostable matter reclamation system, the Casino is able to divert hundreds of tons of composted organic matter from landfill sites.

Both customers and employees participate daily in this by using the appropriate bins that are available in all kitchens, dining areas, bars, bathrooms and gaming areas of the Casino. This initiative helps educate more than three million annual visitors about the importance of the environment.

Ecoresponsible event packages

The Casino du Lac-Leamy convention centre now offers a solution for event organizers looking to responsibly manage their events. Four new, ready-to-go packages now let them organize and promote acknowledged actions that incorporate the principles of sustainable development.
The packages incorporate the principles set out by the Bureau de normalisation du Québec and assist organizers in taking concrete measures to reduce the ecological footprint of their events through offsets, support for local businesses and trash reclamation.

Ecological horticulture

The Casino du Lac-Leamy has moved forward with environmentally-friendly horticulture that includes the use of annuals, hardy plants that can tolerate drought and 100% natural fertilizers.

Actions integrated in an overall approach to sustainable development

Throughout Loto-Québec and its subsidiaries, sustainable development is supported by the responsible management of games of chance, taking into account economic, social and environmental aspects in order to maximize our contribution to the community.
