Sustainable development
In this section, you will learn about the many efforts the Casino du Lac-Leamy has made to maximize its contribution to the
community. The Casino’s various initiatives relate to the three dimensions of sustainable development:
- social fairness
- conservation
- economic performance.
Showcase initiative
A Valentine’s Day meal at Le Gîte Ami
Their hearts filled with love, 33 Casino du Lac-Leamy employees took part in a volunteer day at Le Gîte Ami, a temporary community
shelter for persons dealing with social exclusion and homelessness.
On Valentine’s Day, persons in need could tuck into a memorable meal prepared and served by Casino employees.
The event was held as part of the Community Involvement program, which encourages employees to volunteer their time to good
causes. In fact, we are already looking into repeating the experience with other organizations and the outlook in this regard
is quite positive!
Our heartfelt thanks to all our volunteers!
Economic efficiency
Service contracts awarded to local suppliers
The Casino du Lac-Leamy awards more than 50 service contracts to local suppliers each year (maintenance, landscaping, food,
etc.). This represents nearly 400 indirect jobs that are created or maintained by the Casino.
In all, Québec’s casinos purchase nearly 271 million dollars annually in goods and services from 1,300 businesses in the province.
This policy is used by all of Québec’s casinos.

Our partnership with La Tablée des Chefs: a success story!
The Casino du Lac-Leamy partners with the Tablée des Chefs to redistribute surplus food from Casino restaurants and service
points through Moisson Outaouais. This is tangible action aimed at feeding the needy in the Outaouais region.
The Tablée des Chefs provides a sustainable food brokerage service, networking producers of surplus food with groups that
redistribute it to the needy. The Casino du Lac-Leamy is the first Outaouais business to commit to food redistribution with
the Tablée des Chefs on a regular basis. Since last June, we provided 9000 meals to community organizations as La Soupe populaire
de Hull, the Gîte-ami, the Centre alimentaire d’Aylmer and Moisson Outaouais.
Support for Moisson Outaouais
A number of Casino du Lac-Leamy employees took part in a major food drive for non-perishable items to replenish the stocks
of Moisson Outaouais.
The food drive was part of a giant volunteer day that saw nearly 200 Société des casinos du Québec employee volunteers giving
of their time to support the food security cause. Watch the video highlights.
Blood drive
For the second consecutive year, the Casino du Lac-Leamy organized a major blood donor clinic at the Hilton Lac-Leamy, in
cooperation with Héma-Québec. Casino employees and visitors were invited to give blood.
Response was good, with no less than 153 donors coming out. The experience will doubtlessly be repeated in the future.
Preserving the environment
The Casino du Lac-Leamy Honoured for its Energy Efficiency Program
An efficient composting system
The Casino du Lac-Leamy has been a participant in Gatineau’s municipal composting program for a little more than a year. Thanks
to its compostable matter reclamation system, the Casino is able to divert hundreds of tons of composted organic matter from
landfill sites.
Both customers and employees participate daily in this by using the appropriate bins that are available in all kitchens, dining
areas, bars, bathrooms and gaming areas of the Casino. This initiative helps educate more than three million annual visitors
about the importance of the environment.
Elimination of bottled water
The Casino du Lac-Leamy replaced individual water bottles by reusable glasses in its gaming areas, an initiative that drew
active participation from both employees and customers.
The project, which was rolled out in all Québec casinos, will eliminate nearly 1.2 million plastic bottles annually.
Ecoresponsible event packages
The Casino du Lac-Leamy convention centre now offers a solution for event organizers looking to responsibly manage their events.
Four new, ready-to-go packages now let them organize and promote acknowledged actions that incorporate the principles of sustainable
development.
The packages incorporate the principles set out by the Bureau de normalisation du Québec and assist organizers in taking concrete
measures to reduce the ecological footprint of their events through offsets, support for local businesses and trash reclamation.
Ecological horticulture
The Casino du Lac-Leamy has moved forward with environmentally-friendly horticulture that includes the use of annuals, hardy
plants that can tolerate drought and 100% natural fertilizers.
Actions integrated in an overall approach to sustainable development
Throughout Loto-Québec and its subsidiaries, sustainable development is supported by the responsible management of games of chance, taking into account economic, social and environmental aspects in order to maximize our contribution to the community.
Our commitment leads us to analyze the consequences of our activities in order to, in as much as possible, amplify their positive effects and mitigate negative consequences. This focus is given concrete expression in our sustainable development policy (in French only) [PDF format, 288 KB - Help, updated on June 12, 2007], adopted in 2006, and in our 2008-2013 sustainable development action plan (in French only) [PDF format, 699 KB - Help, updated on April 12, 2009].
